Surrey In The Great War

Are you interested in capturing the history of the First World War and would you like to become part of the Surrey Heritage project to preserve the legacy of wartime Cobham and Stoke D’Abernon for future generations?

The project is helping to build a digital archive of Surrey’s First World War story creating a lasting record of how the war shaped Surrey. Surrey in the Great War: A County Remembers is a four year project, ending in 2019, run by Surrey Heritage and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which aims to discover how the 1914-1918 conflict affected those at the front as well as those left behind.

Cobham Remembers is keen to collect stories and photos about the people and places in Cobham, Stoke D’Abernon, Downside and Hatchford to contribute to the main Surrey project.

This is an ongoing project and the group is adding articles over tiem. Stories already online include Belgian refugees in Cobham, the YMCA Cobham hut in Flanders, the local school and hospitals, and the railways as well as articles about individual local servicemen.

If you have photographs or information about those who served or live in the area at the time, or of local events, sports teams or pretty well anything during that time, please get in touch by emailing

If you are interested in joining the group to help with research we would be glad to hear form you, enthusiasm required but research experience not essential.
